About BHPA

Formed in 1993, the Bigelow House Preservation Association (BHPA) is a 501c3 not-for-profit organization dedicated to preservation of Bigelow House and interpretation of its significance to local and regional history.

BHPA purchased the house from descendants  Daniel and Mary Ann Bigelow in 1994 and undertook a massive restoration of the House. Lost features were restored and its interior was returned to its territorial-era layout. In 1995 Bigelow House opened to the public as a museum, tracing the Bigelows’ history as well as the history of Olympia, Washington State, and the Pacific Northwest.

The purchase of Bigelow House included an unusual life-estate contract clause. Daniel and Mary Ann continued to reside in private rooms within the house while the ground floor was open to public tours. With the end of the life-estate contract in 2005, Bigelow House now functions as Olympia’s community museum, hosting tourists, researchers, and group functions.

Board Meetings

BHPA Board meets at Bigelow House at 5:30pm on the second Monday of each month.  The public is welcome with advance notice.  Please contact BHPA to arrange to attend a meeting.
